In the process, most of the time other shades of the ‘it’ color are produced. With flowers being produced by Mother Nature, it’s important to know which varieties could work within a certain color palette so we decided to take the time and make a comprehensive lineup of some varieties.

We have been so busy lately that we almost forgot to recognize the first birthday of the Flowerpresale.com e-commerce framework. As the platform is being embraced by more and more retailers around the country, we want to say a big “THANK YOU” to the many growers around the world who have helped us in making their products available and indirectly connecting with hundreds of florists throughout the United States. We are very excited about the future and we can’t wait to keep adding new growers, new products, new retailers, and to help the industry transform into a fine-tuned machine it needs to be in order to face the challenges we will be faced with in the near future.

With our network of growers and the information available to us with the OFS Flower Gallery, we are able to recognize trends before others can. We wanted to do our part to bring that information back to the flower industry as a whole.

We are truly blessed with the products we are working with on a daily basis; who doesn’t love flowers? This brand-new initiative will allow us to share our experiences, but do it in a way that we can find a connection between the grower and ultimately, the bride. Some interesting facts about the Kentucky Derby:

 The rose garland, now synonymous with the Kentucky Derby, is the source of the nickname “Run for the Roses” and has a history almost as long as the Derby itself.

1896 – The rose garland first appeared when the winner, Ben Brush, received a floral arrangement of white and pink roses

1904 – The red rose became the official flower of the Kentucky Derby

1925 – New York sports columnist Bill Corum famously dubbed the Kentucky Derby the “Run for the Roses®.”

1932 – The garland as it exists today was first introduced for the 58th running, won by Burgoo King

Each year, a garland of more than 400 red roses is sewn into a green satin backing with the seal of the Commonwealth on one end and the Twin Spires and number of the race’s current renewal on the other. Each garland is also adorned with a “crown” of roses, green fern, and ribbon. The “crown,” a single rose pointing upward in the center of the garland, symbolizes the struggle and heart necessary to reach the Derby Winner’s Circle.

The Kroger Company has been crafting the garland for the Kentucky Derby since 1987. After taking over the duties from the Kingsley Walker florist, Kroger began constructing the prestigious garland in one of its local stores for the public to view on Derby Eve.

Last week we visited one of our rose farms in Ecuador. We were invited to come see this brand new post-harvest machine, imported from Holland.

This machine can classify up to 8100 stems per hour! Roses are “hanging” in this method and become part of a brand new type of post-harvesting process, unique to Ecuador. There are 4 cameras that take a picture from different angles checking stem length, cutting stage, and head-size. There are even UV Rays to detect possible phytosanitary problems on each stem. After that, the machine can also defoliate every stem according to the stem length. It’s great to see more and more technology being introduced in the flower industry!

It has come to our attention that some flower importers in Miami have used a recent weather situation in Ecuador to cause alarm and are implying an upcoming drastic production shortage as a result of this weather incident.

The area where Ecuador experienced, for the first-time ever, light snowfall (actually it was more hail than snow) is far removed from where ALL flower farms are physically located. No damage has been caused to farms as a result of what occurred last week. End of story!

The current lower production is purely due to the normal production cycle and a bit colder weather has made the shortage a small percentage more notable but that is it!
